Animal Nutrition and feedlot productivity

Animal production is the energy dependent process where the nutrients of the feed are converted into animal products like meat, milk or wool. This is a biological process and will determine the productivity or energy input (feed DM, ME or NEg) for the desired product output (carcass mass for a feedlot) of the animal. The production process in the body consists of voluntary dry matter or nutrient and energy intake by the animals, the digestion of these nutrients in the total digestive tract, the absorption into the body and the utilisation of nutrients for building the desired product in the body cells, as well as effective excretion of excess or unwanted products. Any factor inhibiting any one or more of these processes will slow down the production process and consequently the productivity and profitability of the system.
